Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Opens Up About Her Most Important Role: Caregiving

In the summer issue of PainPathways, Mrs. Carter shares her inspiring story of lifelong dedication as a caregiver, and reminds us of the importance of “helping yourself help others.” Accepting the challenging task at a very young age, Carter discusses her early experiences with caregiving for loved ones affected by chronic illness. She explains that it is not only a privilege to provide day-to-day support to someone in need, but it is also often an overwhelming obligation. Mrs. Carter offers helpful tips and resources for caregivers who juggle multiple roles.

As president of the board of directors of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, Mrs. Carter stresses the importance of advocacy, education and support for caregivers and their families. She remarks that “Caregiving is a global issue and one that everyone will be concerned about at some point in their lives.” Through her organization she hopes to foster collaboration and increase awareness of the growing numbers of caregivers and their multifaceted support needs.
